ASTM A515 steel plate is a specification for pressure vessel plates that are intended for use in moderate to high-temperature applications. This material is primarily used in the manufacturing of pressure vessels and industrial boilers, where high strength and excellent toughness are essential. It includes three grades: ASTM A515 Grade 60, Grade 65, and Grade 70.
Key Properties:
- Chemical Composition: ASTM A515 plates typically consist of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon, with specific limits on these elements to achieve desired mechanical properties.
- Mechanical Properties:
- Grade 60: Yield Strength: Minimum 207 MPa (30,000 psi); Tensile Strength: 415 - 550 MPa (60,000 - 80,000 psi); Elongation: Minimum 21% in 200 mm.
- Grade 65: Yield Strength: Minimum 241 MPa (35,000 psi); Tensile Strength: 450 - 590 MPa (65,000 - 85,000 psi); Elongation: Minimum 20% in 200 mm.
- Grade 70: Yield Strength: Minimum 276 MPa (40,000 psi); Tensile Strength: 485 - 620 MPa (70,000 - 90,000 psi); Elongation: Minimum 19% in 200 mm.
Applications:
ASTM A515 steel plates are commonly used in:
- Manufacturing of pressure vessels for the oil and gas industry.
- Construction of boilers and heat exchangers.
- Fabrication of industrial storage tanks and other pressure-sensitive equipment.
- Applications where high strength and durability are required, especially in high-temperature environments.
In summary, ASTM A515 steel plates provide a robust and reliable solution for various applications in the pressure vessel and boiler manufacturing sectors, ensuring safety and performance in demanding conditions.
It covers three grades ranged by different strength as follows:
Grade U.S. [Sl] | Tensile Strength, ksi [MPa] |
---|---|
60 [415] | 60-80 [415-550] |
65 [450] | 65-85 [450-585] |
70 [485] | 70-90 [485-620] |
The maximum thickness of plates is limited only by the capacity of the composition to meet the specified mechanical property requirements; however, current practice normally limits the maximum thickness of plates furnished under this specification as follows:
Grade U.S. [Sl] | Maximum Thickness, in. [mm] |
---|---|
60 [415] | 8 [200] |
65 [450] | 8 [200] |
70 [485] | 8 [200] |
For plates produced from coil and finished without heat treatment or with stress relieving only, the additional requirements including test report shall comply with Specification A20/A20M.

- Marking, loading and ordering information;
- Coils are excluded from this specifcation in case cutted to the plates form.
Material and Manufacture
The steel shall be killed and made to a coarse austenitic grain size practice.
Heat Treatment
ASTM A515 plates thickness in 50 mm [2 inch] thickness and under are normally supplied with as-rolled condition, unless it is ordered as requested.
Plates over 50 mm [2 in] in thickness shall be normalized.
