ASTM A283 Grade C & D Plate Specification

  • Home >>

ASTM A283 steel plate is a specification for carbon steel plates intended for use in low to moderate strength requirements. This material is primarily used for structural and construction purposes, making it versatile for a wide range of applications. It covers Grade C and D, both applied for general structural construction.

ASTM A283 Grade C Steel Plate

A283 steel plates could be produced by plate type and coil type, in case it made from coil type and furnished without heat treatment or with stress relieving only, the addtional requirements, including additional test methods and test result, shall comply with A6/A6M specification.

Reference Standards:

  • ASTM A6/A6M: For general requirements for rolled structural steel bars, plates, shaples and sheet piles.

Key Differences:

  • Carbon Content: ASTM A283 Grade D has a lower maximum carbon content compared to Grade C, which can result in slightly improved weldability and toughness.
  • Mechanical Properties: While both grades share similar yield and tensile strengths, the elongation percentage differs, with Grade C typically exhibiting higher ductility.

Applications:

Both ASTM A283 Grade C and D plates are used in:

  • Construction of bridges and buildings.
  • Manufacturing of structural components and equipment.
  • Production of pressure vessels and storage tanks.
  • General fabrication and structural applications where moderate strength is sufficient.

Manufacturing Process of ASTM A283 Grade C & D Plate

The steel shall be killed and made by one or more of the following processes:

  • Open-hearth
  • Basic-oxygen
  • Electric furnace

General Requirements for Delivery

ASTM A283 plates shall comply with A6/A6M, coils are exlcuded from this specification until they are cutted to finished plates.
