ASTM A285 Grade C Steel Plate Specification

  • Home >>

ASTM A285 steel plate is a specification for low to intermediate tensile strength carbon steel plates, primarily used in the construction of pressure vessels and industrial applications. This material is designed for situations where low to moderate strength is required, along with good weldability.

The steel plate under ASTM A285 ranges in three grades, A, B and C, most common use is ASTM A285 Grade C plates. Which shall be made by killed, semi-killed, capped or rimmed steel practices at manufacturer's option.

Key Properties:

  • Chemical Composition: ASTM A285 plates are made up of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur, with specific limits placed on these elements to achieve desired mechanical qualities.
  • Mechanical Properties:
    • Yield Strength: Typically ranges from 138 MPa (20,000 psi) for Grade A to around 245 MPa (35,000 psi) for Grade C.
    • Tensile Strength: Approximately 310 MPa (45,000 psi) to 450 MPa (65,000 psi), depending on the specific grade.
    • Elongation: Minimum elongation values can reach up to 21% in a 200 mm gauge length, indicating reasonable ductility.

Applications:

ASTM A285 steel plates are commonly used in:

  • Manufacturing of pressure vessels for oil and gas industries.
  • Construction of storage tanks and boilers.
  • Structural applications that require good weldability and moderate strength.
  • General fabrication where high strength is not a primary requirement.

In summary, ASTM A285 steel plates provide a versatile and economical solution for various applications in the industrial and structural sectors, particularly when low to intermediate strength is sufficient.

Referenced Standard

For killed carbon steels only refer to below ASTM specifications.

  • A 299/A 299M: Carbon steel manganese silicon pressure vessel plates.
  • A 515/A 515M: Carbon steel for intermediate and higher temperature services of pressure vessel plates.
  • A516/A516M: Carbon steel for moderate and lower temperature pressure vessel plates.

Maximum thickness of plates is limited to 50 mm [2 inch] for all grades.

Referenced Documents:

ASTM Sandards:

  • A20/A20M: General requirements for steel plates for pressure vessels.

General Requirements and Ordering Information:

  • Testing and retesting methods, procedures, dimension tolerance, mass, quality and repair defects, marking, loading and ordering information shall comply with A20/A20M.
  • In additional to basic requirements, certain supplementary requirements are available.
  • Coils are excluded from A285 until they have been cutted to plate.
